The Magical Trinity
The power of three - an exploration of the number three and what it represents
After recent posts delving into the myth and (my) use of the number five and nine, now I turn to the number three - another important number in my life.
The primary focus of this post will be the power of three within witchcraft; however, before we get there, let me deal with the more mathematical nature of the number.
Number, Shape, and Spirit
The number three is the second smallest prime number and is a twin prime with the number five (which pleases me greatly). It is also a cousin prime with the number seven.
While one line is still, and two lines create opposition, three lines create a container; a shape which encloses, and therefore offers protection. A triangle is constructed with three sides and is the smallest non-self-intersecting polygon, and the only polygon which doesn’t have proper diagonals. It is also a very stable physical shape - if not the most stable - which is why triangles are widely used in engineering and construction.
Spiritually, there are many religions containing concepts of a trinity in some form - such as in Buddhism (the Three Jewels), Christianity (the Holy Trinity), Hinduism (the Trimurti and Tridevi), and Taoism (the three Pure Ones). And, of course, the Triple Goddess and Hecate, found within Wicca.
This brings us to the true magic of the number three, and why this number resonates for me as a pagan and a witch.
The Triple Goddess: Maiden, Mother, Crone
As an archetypal embodiment of the Divine Feminine, the Triple Goddess moves through the cycles of life, nature, and transformation - a trinity of phases represented usually as moon phases. This trio of symbols represents defined stages which also convey the journey taken through life.
The Maiden is beginnings, innocence, and potential. Shown with the waxing moon, she rules over creativity, independence, sensuality, and youth. This is where personal growth and new ventures are seeded, with a trust in the unknown.
The Mother is abundance, creative expression, nurturing, and protection. She is the full moon, beautifully radiant and complete. This is where blessings, fertility, healing, and relationships are centred, with a focus on how sacred it is to create in all forms.
The Crone is death, endings, intuition, and transformation. Here is wisdom and in the waning moon all the lessons learned through life. She is there to guide those who trust her through the veil, to navigate the shadows, and teaches how surrender holds strength.
For witches, the Triple Goddess is the spiritual heart who enables us to understand our transformation - emotionally, physically, spiritually. And, of course, magically. She shows us how to begin, how to sustain, and how to release. The Triple Goddess is a circle: lunar rhythm, seasonal wheel, life’s journey.
Everything is changing, but the cycle remains.
The Rule of Three
The Rule of Three (also known as a the Threefold Law) is a way of expressing the idea of ‘whatever energy you send out returns to you threefold’. Good or bad. It is a way of providing a spiritual foundation and ethic to ensure that witches practice with appropriate intention and accountability.
After all, it’s easy to hex without consequence.
The Rule of Three is there to ensure that witches remember that working with the universe is a conversation, a unified set of actions, not demands. And that anything done will have repercussions. It ensure that witches remain mindful and examine decisions cognisant of the potential impact.
Linked to this is the idea of using tools in threes within the structure of spellwork or to enhance ritual, etc. because working in triads emphasises the power and balance. A threefold current of energy can be found by drawing tarot cards in threes, placing crystals in a triangular pattern on the altar, or using three candles, etc. Such patterns also reinforce the idea of awareness moving through to transformation through the flow of each piece added to the whole.
Casting Spells: Repetition
When casting spells or performing rituals, repetition is one of the strongest tools, and doing so three times seals the spell, amplifies it, and aids in manifestation. This is because:
The first action / voicing announces the intention
The second action / voicing adds strength to it
The third action / voicing sets it in motion
Repeating spells or statements, or the actions themselves, aligns thought, word, and deed (which then leads to manifesting the intention). The rhythm combines mind, body, and spirit into a unified magic.
And we all know words have power - that is why we call them spells.
Any affirmation or incantation spoken three times layers the intention into the energy of the universe; it is a way of communicating with every realm and making the intention clear, sending the energy out ready to be acted on. To further strengthen the spell, it can be performed on three consecutive days.
Ultimately, the use of tools in threes (whether material, vocal, spiritual) honours the natural rhythm of the universe, it echoes the systems of creation, and this is an incredibly powerful thing.
Of course, it is not just in spells where the idea of three being important is found. Even the most scientific amongst us will likely have uttered ‘third times a charm’ or something similar, and this is folk magic which has persisted. It is the ancient belief of intention becoming action. Such patterns are also found in fairytales, myths, and stories where there are three trials or three events which must be overcome before a resolution is found.
Power is built in rhythm; three is the how the universe talks and assists in change.
Of course, how the message comes through can also be linked to the number three, similar to the idea of how a spell can be manifested through repetition, so too can spiritual signs be shared:
One can be a glitch
Two can be a coincidence
Three should not be ignored
It is believed that seeing a sign three times is the universe crossing the veil between worlds to ensure that the spiritual message has been truly seen. How this sign is delivered can vary (seeing the same animal, hearing the same song, recurring dreams, etc.) but the trinity of them is the magical confirmation. It is a request that the message is acknowledged.
A pattern of three should not be dismissed - it is too many to be a coincidence; instead, it is an invitation to be deciphered. A scared communication seeking comprehension - and it should not be ignored.
Numerology and Sacred Geometry1
Recognising the power of the number three is the beginning of accepting the rhythm of the universe. It is the number of the witch, the storyteller, and spell-caster: those who use words to shape their worlds.
In numerology, the number three is a sacred number - it represents creation, self-expression, and spiritual alignment. It is magical and playful.
And, within numerology and witchcraft, the number three symbolises a cycle: birth, life, death; beginning, middle, end; mind, body, spirit. It shows that energy and magic is always moving, transforming, becoming something else while maintaining the stable structure it lives within.
It is magic held within the simple, stable shape formed by three lines.
The repetition of the number three amplifies the message. In numerology, the number 333 is seen as a divine confirmation of direction - that the right path is being walked. Some witches also interpret seeing 333 as a sign a triple-aspect deity (such as Hecate or the Triple Goddess) is present.
Within sacred geometry, three intersecting lines or points help form sigils, and the Pagan and Celtic triquetra (or triskele - the triple spiral) represents eternal cycles (birth, death, rebirth; past, present, future, etc.). These symbols are ritual anchors which provide a dynamic link between the idea and the reality. The number three threads through it all, providing structure and integrity.
When the duality (the polarity of light / dark, masculine / feminine, etc.) becomes a trinity then a threshold is formed - a triangle becomes a doorway which allows for transformation. This is represented in the number and the symbols formed using three lines, three forms.
Triangles are potent shapes - it is a container, a doorway, a symbol. They are used to represent the elements water, fire, earth, and air (and elements make up the world), and can be utilised to contain energy during spells, can be used to focus power (drawing energy to a point), and also provide a safe boundary by scribing a boundary.
The triads formed by many different related things are also reminders of just how connected the world is - numbers, shapes, all echo the power of the number three.

There are three realms acknowledged by many witches: the upper, middle, and lower - all three can be travelled and each holds specific insight. The upper offers celestial wisdom through divinity. The middle is that of everyday, human experience. The lower offers deep healing and shadow work. All three together offer a cohesive set of guidance, should the witch be open to it.
The mathematical and the spiritual are wonderfully combined - after all, science is purely magic we don’t yet quite understand. The number three is a glimpse into the mechanics of the universe, how the cycles of creation influence our lives and all things, and connects us all.
I still maintain that five is the magic number - as it is the quintessence which threads through everything; however, three certainly has magic to share.

Thank you for reading; I appreciate your time and your support. If you feel called to leave an offering, it would be sincerely welcome. But, your company is gratefully received regardless 🖤
Yes, I did end with this segment because I wanted it to roughly loop into where we started - mathematics to numerology - to create a cycle.

I was waiting for 3 actually. I have a mild OCD and three is really important to me. I have to do certain tasks or repeat something 3 times for my brain to remain calm. This was so good. The way you explained how the universe talks through signs and the energies was so good.
Good stuff! This also reminded me that three is the maximum number of objects we can instantly recognize the quantity of. For example: III vs. IIII. Over three objects, we have to pause to consider the quantity. I've noticed this also with concepts. If I have to recount to someone more than three things I did in a day, jobs I've had, projects I'm working on, I always stumble and to think. Also, I remember learning how some of the oldest numbers written in cuneiform use a tally system that starts with 3 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Babylonian_cuneiform_numerals#/media/File:Babylonian_numerals.svg
